This is a new talk by Colin Wright, and is based on real applications of maths in his own day job, dealing with the use of radar in maritime surveillance and safety.

Mathematical topics include:

  • simple geometry,
  • vector calculus,
  • approximation theory,
    • (with continued fractions!)
  • simple calculus

Applications:

  • computing optimal intercepts,
  • presentation and display of information,
  • surveying,
  • distances in navigation
    • on-route vs off-route calculations
    • R(1-cos(t))
      • Sorry? What?
  • optimal pricing strategies

All is easily within the grasp of an interested 14 year old, but potentially complex enough to stretch undergraduate mathematics students.

This builds on the various MathsTalks that Colin also gives.
