File: StateTransitionDiagram Some systems or objects can be in different states. A kettle may be full or empty, on or off, cold or hot, and the state will change under the influence of outside circumstances, or simply the passing of time. A StateTransitionDiagram shows each state as a location, and the transitions between them as arrows. Each arrow is labelled with the reason for the state transition. Thus we can follow the status of the system as different stimuli arrive, because the same stimulus may have different effects according to the state the system is in at the time it arrives. The MM_STD is an example of a StateTransitionDiagram. In it the states are the current setting of the juggler's arms. Crossed left over right, uncrossed, or crossed right over left, and the transitions between them are the kinds of throws that can be made from that state.
